CDC employment opportunities 2011

The Division of Laboratory Sciences at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently seeking a laboratory research fellow (http://www.orau.gov/cdc/) to fill a 2-3 year term position in Atlanta, GA. The Division of Laboratory Sciences (www.cdc.gov/dls/) maintains a state-of-the-art laboratory facility and specializes in applying advanced analytical methods for quantifying human exposure to environmental toxicants in support of National Center for Environmental Health. This position involves measuring volatile organic compounds in human blood and tobacco smoke. The candidate should hold a chemistry degree or demonstrate strong interest in bioanalytical applications. Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate knowledge, skills and/or interest in mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, solid phase microextraction, handling/processing of human blood samples, data processing, and data review. Candidates must have a competitive GPA (3.0 or higher) and be available to start immediately. Please note that relocation expenses are not covered by this fellowship.



Stipends are determined as follows:

B.S. - GS7 ($40,534)
M.S. - GS9 ($49,581)

Annually, all participants will receive a cost of living increase and a performance based increase up to an additional 3%.

Health insurance can be provided by ORISE at the participant's request (insurance will be paid by ORISE in addition to listed stipend).

Requirements
The ORISE Fellowship requires that participants have graduated within 3 years from start date with a B.S. or M.S.

Open Process Chemist position

Position: Process Control Chemist – Ajay North America, LLC.

Duties:
Among others, conduct raw material and in-process analysis using Ajay’s procedures including, but not limited to, wet chemistry methods, GC methods, AA methods, etc. Record all results in lab notebooks and computers. Communicate with technical director, operators and other plant personnel to assure key process parameters are maintained within the acceptable range.

Specific duties:
1. Verify calibrations of scales, pH meters and other critical process components
2. Perform and/or supervise in-process checks of ongoing production chemistries to assist plant operators
3. Monitor processes and gather data toward improving process operating efficiency
4. Check raw materials for suitability and conformance to company specifications
5. Certify process equipment and production area to adopted cleanliness standard.
6. Assist as requested in vendor compliance and suitability audits
7. Assist as requested in ISO 9001, 14001 and GMP activities
8. Prepare reports of findings and activities and present to management
9. Other similar duties as assigned

Education / Experience Required: B.S. Chemistry or similar

Open Chemist Positions

Position: Analytical Chemist – Ajay North America, LLC.

Duties:
Among others, test finished products and raw materials using Ajay’s procedures including, but not limited to, wet chemistry
methods, GC methods, AA methods, etc. Record all test results in lab notebooks and computers. Prepare needed reagents and
solutions. Check results of other laboratory or plant personnel. Check recorded lab information for accuracy. Complete, print and sign
certificates of analysis for finished products. Maintain flexibility to assay and analyze non-standard products and research projects.

Specific duties for chemist after initial training:
1. Check calibrations of scales and pH meters
2. Run lab standards
3. In-process checks of ongoing production chemistries to assist plant operators
4. Operate GC to assay alkyl iodides, etc. and complete other associated tests
5. Share ICP and other lab testing of final products with other lab personnel
6. Last hour every day, clean up and record all the day’s results on computer.

Priority of testing:
1. Raw materials waiting to be consumed or unloaded from trucks
2. In-process testing to facilitate ongoing production
3. Products for shipment ASAP
4. Products for inventory
5. Research projects
