Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

National Center for Environmental Health

Division of Laboratory Sciences

The Clinical Chemistry Branch at the National Center for Environmental Health, CDC is performing research in the area of human biomonitoring. This research involves the development of analytical methods to measure human exposure to compounds such as acrylamide, a probable carcinogen, and trans-fatty acids, which have been linked with cardiovascular disease. Information obtained with this research will be used to determine the extent of exposure in the population, to identify population subgroups with increased exposure, and to assess possible associations between exposure and health effects.

The research involves activities such as sample preparation using automated equipment, analysis of samples by mass spectrometry, data processing and analysis, and presentation of results. The candidate needs to perform these tasks in compliance with CDC and CLIA policies and regulations, which requires record keeping activities and performing administrative tasks.

This fellowship will provide the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in human biomonitoring using state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and procedures, in working in a CLIA regulated environment, and in biomonitoring related public health activities.

We are seeking a candidate with a B.S. degree in science (Minimum GPA: 3.0) and experience in chemical and analytical laboratory work (preferably with HPLC, GC, and MS instrumentation) as well as good communication skills. Further, experience conducting routine laboratory tasks is desirable. The candidate should be proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

This fellowship is administered through the CDC Foundation. The duration of this fellowship appointment is 1 – 2 years. The stipend depends on grade and qualification and follows those described in federal salary tables (GS tables). The workplace is located in Atlanta, GA. For further information about the Division of Laboratory Sciences visit http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/dls/.

BE A TUTOR!

Are you interested in giving back to the Atlanta community through fun
and dynamic tutoring programs? If so, please read on to learn about
what MOVE's tutoring programs have to offer you!

TEACH is offering two tutoring opportunities:
Place: Henry Grady High School
Subject: Math
Days: Mon-Thurs
Time: 3:30-4:30 pm
Duration: 1 hr.

Place: Create Your Dreams
Subjects: Calculus, chem, bio, physics, etc.
Days: Tues
Time: 5-7 pm
Duration: 2 hrs.

If you would like to join or have any questions, please e-mail
Christine Kim
(ckim77@gatech.edu) the times that you can tutor, the subject and
place, and your transportation situation (car or no car). If you do
have a car, let me know if you are comfortable with carpooling with
others. We should be starting tutorials on the week of January 23 so
please send in your information ASAP.

Children's Restoration Network (CRN) is a new program that focuses on
tutoring and mentoring homeless children living in shelters in the
Atlanta area. This program offers a lot of benefits for volunteers, such as:

1. Great experience: It's a wonderful opportunity for tutors/mentors to
interact with a wide age range of students. Volunteers build strong
relationships with their students and become a positive role model for
a child just by spending time with them.
2. Flexible schedule: Volunteers may choose the dates and times at
which they would like tutor, and volunteers are only required to
tutor/mentor once a week for 1.5 hours. In addition, volunteers can
choose a certain age range to tutor as well as whether they would
prefer one-on-one or small group tutoring.
3. Easy access: There are a few shelters within walking distance of
Tech, so transportation would not be required for volunteers who choose
those locations.

This program is a great way to give back to the community and to make a
huge difference in one child's life just by showing up once a week and
showing them that someone cares about their well-being!
For more info or to sign up, visit
http://move.gatech.edu/tutoring/crn.php
or feel free to contact Joyce Wong at jwong32@gatech.edu. Please sign
up before JANUARY 24 to begin volunteering this semester.

CORE is a tutoring and mentoring program for elementary and middle
school students. This program operates outside of the classroom
environment and includes field trips for the students and tutors. This
program volunteers at City of Refuge in the afternoon Monday through
Thursday. For more information, please contact Marcus Walker at mwalker42@gatech.edu.

PIE is an opportunity to assist middle school students as they study
for standardized tests. This occurs primarily in a classroom setting,
but also offers 1 on 1 tutoring. For more information, please contact
Stefanie Olivier at solivier6@gatech.edu.

TTP is a tutoring program that works in all subjects at Centennial
Place Elementary, which is very walkable from campus. This program
only requires one hour of tutoring time a week and is very flexible.
For more information, please contact Kelsie Riemenschneider at kjr3@gatech.edu.

If you have any other questions regarding tutoring or MOVE, please feel
free to contact me, Christina Bins, at cbins3@gatech.edu.

Thank you, and I look forward to an exciting year of tutoring with you!
