Intro to Avery Technology and a Discussion on Making the Transition from School to Industry


Abstract:
This presentation will provide an introduction to the R&D structure and technology platforms of Avery Dennison.  Avery is a $6 billion revenue, Fortune 500 company which makes a variety of pressure sensitive products for labeling and adhesive solutions.  Part of the presentation will also focus on making the transition from school to industrial R&D.  Also to be discussed is Avery’s Technology Leadership Development program (TLDP), a technology rotational program currently seeking PhD and Masters candidates for employment.


Biography: 
Henry Milliman is a research scientist at Avery Dennison in the Performance Tapes Division based in Cleveland, Ohio.  He received his B.S. in Chemistry from SUNY Fredonia in 2007 and his Ph.D. in Macromolecular Science and Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2012 where he worked with Prof. Dave Schiraldi.

GT Consulting Club meeting April 12, 2014

The Undergraduate Consulting Club will be hosting a Case Competition on April 12th, Saturday. The event is open to the entire campus. 

The event details/logistics are as follows:
  • Date: April 12th
  • Time: 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. 
  • Logistics:
    • 12 teams will be selected. Teams will consist of 2-4 members.
    • The case will be released on Monday, April 7th.
    • There will be 2 rounds to the competition - Each team will present to a panel of judges in the first round, and the top teams will present in the final round. 
  • Prizes:
    • $200 awarded to the first place team
    • $100 awarded to the second place team
  • Other fantastic opportunities:
    • Experience in a case competition (resume booster and/or something to talk about in an interview)
    • Opportunity network with judges from top consulting firms - Bain, Deloitte, Accenture, and IBM (subject to change)

 Position Purpose:

Cargill is actively investigating many novel opportunities to convert biofeedstocks (corn starch,  corn dextrose, corn oil, vegetable oil distillates, ethanol feedstocks, by-product stream blends, etc.) into new value-added products via fermentation or chemical processing.  This position will guide efforts to discover and confirm suitable properties and attributes of potential bioprocessed materials for market/customer use.  The position will independently drive the characterization of these materials relative to chemical and physical performance for various applications and customer needs.  This position will coordinate and provide the technical leadership and expertise to target and match the right material properties with the right customer needs/solutions.

Principal Accountabilities:

Independently assess industrial products/prototypes of materials produced via fermentation/chemical conversation/formula blend, etc. for applicability and suitability for targeted market and customer needs.  Must determine proper testing methods and protocol from customers, industry standards, literature, etc.

Partners with Tech Service/Sales/GTM groups to support new product/application promotion.  Collaborates with Cargill commercial employees in customer facing meetings to learn product application and performance criteria.  Provides after sales-contact  technical support for solving applications issues and strategies; guides commercial teams to assess potential customer value/product support needs, etc. regarding the use of Cargill materials and capital assets.

Provides assessment, guidance, and direction to R&D teams/resources regarding chemistries, properties and specification required by potential products of interest.  This will provide for needs of research and discovery for materials available/of interest for processing by Cargill.

Interface with customers/industry experts/data sources to compile needed expertise and information regarding product categories and applications targets.
Prepare reports and assessments regarding suitability, economics, comparative analysis, etc. for customers, R&D teams, sales team, engineering teams of prospective materials.

Qualifications

 Required:

  • BS in Chemistry or related scientific discipline
  • Minimum 5 years experience in developing novel analytical and applications testing methods
  • Ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical colleagues and customers on novel and highly complex product application phenomena.
  • Demonstrated record of developing and fostering complex product solutions to multiple applications/industries
  • Experience in managing customer relationships/co-development efforts
  • Experience in participating with cross functional and multi-cultural teams
  • Ability to travel 20-30% time with frequent travel to Cargill Cedar Rapids facility.
  • Draw upon in-depth knowledge to develop and support novel product innovation/substitution by partnering with businesses and key strategic customers.
  • Develop strong business and product application knowledge to recognize and influence business opportunities for customers seeking novel product functionality and/or viable substitutions to meet emerging market and regulatory opportunities.
  • Actively partners with IAM liaison to assist with the development of opportunistic IP around unique product attributes for specific applications.

Preferred:
  • M.S. and/or PhD in Organic Chemistry or related scientific discipline
  • Experience with substitution of bio-derived materials for conventionally used petrochemical derived materials
  • Experience with chemical/materials applications testing and development
  • Experience with Cargill businesses and functions
  • Experience in developing effective intellectual property claims/strategies for novel product attributes
  • Experience/contact with potential customer organization developing novel solutions for bio-derived chemicals

FULBRIGHT INFORMATION SESSION

Students may apply for a Fulbright during the senior undergraduate year or during graduate school and prior to completing PhD research.

Students should be working with the Fellowships Office now to prepare for the August campus deadline to apply for grants during the 2015-2016 academic year.

A letter of invitation is needed for research and graduate study, and awards are available in more than 140 countries. English Teaching Assistant (ETA) applications do not require an invitation.

Applicants must be US citizens.

Our Sensor Manufacturing group here at OPTI Medical is hiring for a chemist with organic synthesis experience (can be during undergraduate research). The position requires a bachelors with 0-2 years experience. NIST lab chemist position - spring 2014 - Maryland

Laboratory Chemist

The National Institute of Standards and Technology Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking a chemist to work in our research and sample preparation laboratories. The NCNR is a national user facility that develops and makes available to the general scientific community advance instrumentation for materials research. The NCNR is a worldwide leader in neutron sciences with 28 operating instruments serving more than 2200 research participants/year.

The general responsibilities include the organization and maintenance of 14 laboratories; including equipment and supplies, coordination of laboratory usage, and assisting visiting researchers in the safe operation of equipment. Responsibilities in these areas include: maintaining the chemical inventory, safety training, development and maintenance of laboratory documentation, collection and disposal of chemical waste, and design and project management of laboratory renovations.
Applicants must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a physical science, life science or engineering that includes 30 semester hours in chemistry. It is essential for this position to have excellent verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to work both individually and in a team environment. This position requires competency in performing multiple functional tasks, attention to detail, and strong customer service. 

This is a fulltime position; salary is in the range from $42,631-$74,761 depending on qualifications and experience.
