South Carolina College of Pharmacy (USC Campus) - SPRING 2016 OPEN HOUSE
The University of South Carolina campus (Columbia, SC) of the South Carolina College of Pharmacy (SCCP) will host a Free Open House on Saturday, April 9th, from 1pm-5pm. The event is open to ALL majors with an interest in health professions careers.
The
event will include an overview of SCCP admissions, job placement, the
Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum, professional student
organizations, research opportunities, fourth year rotations
(internships), etc. The Open House will also feature tours and
demonstrations in the community, compounding, and sterile compounding
labs.

you have students with a general interest in pharmacy or who are
strongly considering pharmacy as a future profession, please forward the

Research talk: Coatings with Improved Eco-Footprint through the use of Polymer Pigment Composites

Abstract: In the United States, approximately 700 million gallons of house paint are produced each year. Practical adsorbing latex polymer technology is a new innovation in the coatings industry which offers the ability to improve the sustainability while lowering the cost of paint. This is accomplished by reducing dependence on TiO2, a key raw material with a large impact on the environmental footprint of white and pastel paint bases. This novel technology replaces the conventional paint binder with a smarter material which does everything the conventional binderdoes while additionally improving pigment efficiency. These polymeric pre-composite binder particles have been designed to interact with coatings grade TiO2particles. By employing pre-composite binders during the standard paint making process, pigment / polymer composites self assemble which result in a more ordered distribution of TiO2 in the paint film, improving not only hiding but barrier properties as well.
Pre-composite polymers offer a powerful advantage by combining improvements in sustainability, performance,and economics. This innovative technology provides cost-efficient improvements in key sustainability metrics as demonstrated by a third-party validated life cycle assessment. Production of this technology is measured by millions of pounds and was recently awarded a US EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award.

position is at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the
Division of Laboratory Sciences, Tobacco and Volatiles Branch. We are
seeking a candidate with a B.S. degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or
related scientific discipline to join the CDC as an ORISE research
fellow in the Tobacco Products Laboratory. The position would involve
chemical research on a variety of tobacco products including cigarettes,
smokeless products, and electronic cigarettes.
Job Functions to Include:
Sample Preparation
Data Acquisition
Routine Instrument Maintenance/Troubleshooting
Data Reporting including written and oral presentations
Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Physics or related subject
Basic understanding of chemistry laboratory practices
General knowledge of analytical chemistry
Analytical instrumentation experience (GC-MS and/or LC-MS a plus but not required)
Laboratory research experience (including proper record keeping and laboratory safety practices)
Ability to effectively communicate and work with others in team environment

Communication: * The technician will submit findings in written format, of high quality, in a timely manner, including formal format. * Reports may require a summary section of conclusions and recommendations. * Verbal communications with both internal and external customers may be necessary. * Follow up review as required based on scope and complexity of the testing request.
