Worthwhile Volunteering Opportunities

FACULTY, STAFF, and UNDERGADUATE, and GRADUATE STUDENT VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR THE EVENTS LISTED BELOW.

(1)   The Science Olympiad Regional Competition for high school students will be held at Georgia Tech on Saturday, February 21st.  CEISMC is sponsoring this event. Twelve teams, comprised of 15 students per team, from the metro Atlanta area have registered to participate in the competition.  Winners will progress to the state competition to be held at Emory University in March. We need volunteers to serve as Event Supervisors to conduct one of the 23 featured events (see the attached document that lists the activities by clusters).  Please note that the general categories of events are paper and pencil tests, inquiry activities that may involve rotating stations, and testing of devices that the teams have previously constructed and bring to the competition.  Event supervisors must be thoroughly familiar with the rules/guidelines that govern their respective events, and in some cases must generate test questions or activities, or the apparatus to test devices. The time commitment on the day of the competition would range from ~2-5 hours, depending on whether your event is offered more than once.  Competition will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at  2:00 p.m., with an awards ceremony scheduled for 3:30 p.m.  Please contact Gustavia Evans at gustavia.evans@ceismc.gatech.edu for additional information.

(2)   The STEM Mini-Conference, under the auspices of the Atlanta Science Festival, is being offered for the second year at Georgia Tech on Saturday, March 21st, from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. CEISMC is sponsoring this event.  This year's event will be expanded to include high school teachers in addition to middle school teachers.  We need volunteers to provide a hands-on instructional session of 1.5 hours duration which will be offered twice.  We will focus on 6th grade Earth Science, 7th grade Life Science, 8th grade Physical Science, High School Biology, High School Chemistry, High School Physics and middle and high school mathematics.  Since this is a "STEM" event, mathematics, engineering, and technology applications should be integrated into the sessions when possible. Please contact Gustavia Evans atgustavia.evans@ceismc.gatech.edu for additional information.

(3)   The Science Department of Atlanta Public Schools will hold its annual District and Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Coretta Scott King High School located at 1190 Northwest Dr. NW Atlanta, GA. 30318.

The purpose of this fair is to permit students in grades three through twelve throughout the system an opportunity to present their original research projects in the annual District and Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

We are asking you to contribute your expertise and time as a judge on either of the following dates:

·   DISTRICT - Tuesday, January 27, 2015: Projects will be judged to determine the finalists in grades 3rd-5th.

·   REGIONAL - Wednesday, January 28, 2015: Projects will be judged to determine the semi-finalists in grades 6th – 8th (Junior Division) and 9th -12th (Senior Division).

·   REGIONAL RUN-OFF -Thursday, January 29th, 2015: Projects will be judged to determine the finalistsin the 6th – 8th (Junior Division) and 9th -12th (Senior Division) and the Gold Key Winners that will advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair. These projects will advance to the 67th Georgia Science and Engineering Fair held at the University of Georgia on Thursday, March 26th through Saturday, March 28th, 2015.

If interested, please e-mail your name, institution, profession, date available and contact information to Tina Lamar ( alamar@atlanta.k12.ga.us ) or Dr. Mashawn Duncan-Young ( mdyoung@atlanta.k12.ga.us ). You may also register directly online at

Univ. of Tennessee Chemistry REU

We are now accepting applications to our 2015 REU, so we would like for students in your department to first know about it.

It’s a 10-week program. All undergraduate students are eligible to apply. Selected students will be joining a research group to work with faculty members and graduate students on a specific project. They will also receive free housing, free parking on campus, and a stipend around $5,000.

We also offer 9 seminars in all areas of chemistry throughout the program along with many workshops such as resume building and ethics. Last year participants also visited Oak Ridge National Lab and Eastman Chemical Company. We plan to continue offering site visits this year.
It’s a great opportunity for students who are interested in research or would like to consider grad school after graduation.
More information can be found at: http://www.chem.utk.edu/reu/index.html. Online application: http://www.chem.utk.edu/reu/apply.html.

The application deadline is February 1st 2015.
Please forward this to all that you think will be interested and do not hesitate to contact me if you or your students have any questions.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity

Hi Undergraduates,

I'm Enbo Zhao, a graduate student from Dr. Gleb Yushin's group in the MSE department. I'm looking for undergraduate assistants who're interested in energy storage and battery research.

Our group focus on electrochemistry-related nano-structured materials. I'm currently working on supercapacitors based on nano-carbon/metal oxides electrode materials. We will start from synthesizing electrode materials and proceed to electrochemical tests then. Therefore, the students will basically gain the skill of how to assemble electric devices from the very initial materials in our group. You will also receive 3 credits/semester (weekly working hour must be more than 9 hours) (credits are of MSE 2699/4699, not CHEM ones) letter-graded by Dr. Yushin based on your performance in lab. I am looking for students that are conscientious, hard-working, curious and aggressive. Their GPAs are expected to be no less than 3.5, but not absolutely. After all, a lab is the place to practice theories from books. Dr. Yushin is very nice and smart and our group will be a great place to enrich your experiences. Please email me your resume if  interested in the opportunity

2014 Herty Medalist Undergraduate Research Symposium

On September 5th from 1 - 5 pm in the afternoon, the Department of Chemistry at Morehouse College & the Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) will once again come together to present the 9th Annual Herty Medal Undergraduate Research Symposium (HMURS).  As you may remember from previous years, the Herty Medal is awarded annually by the Georgia Local Section to give public recognition to the work and service of outstanding chemists who have significantly contributed to their chosen fields.  This year's recipient is Dr. Luigi G. Marzilli, William White Tison Professor of Chemistry and Chair, Department of Chemistry at Louisiana State University.  As in years past, Morehouse College is again proud to host this event, specific details about which are available online at:

(NOTE: You may need to refresh your browser once connected)

As both chair and a member of the planning committee for this annual event, I am writing to you to invite you to this event as well as to ask that you forward/announce this invitation to all undergraduate students who have done or are planning to undertake undergraduate research experiences.  Since HMURS will include several lectures aimed at undergraduates from professionals in the field, this event serves as an ideal venue for them to be inspired toward careers in chemistry and the related sciences.  In particular, students who have performed research (i.e. with you, a colleague, or even as part of a summer research program) should be strongly encouraged to present posters as there is no registration fee for this event.  In addition, the top poster presenter(s) will be selected for a $500 travel grant to be applied towards attending an ACS National Meeting.  (The upcoming meeting of ACS in Spring 2015 will be held in Denver, CO).  As well, several poster presenters will be awarded one-year student memberships in the ACS.  Attached to this message, you will find a flyer announcing details about this event for posting/further dissemination amongst your departmental colleagues and students.

All participants may register through the link for the main HMURS site provided above, or at:

While registration is required for all poster presenters, it is nonetheless strongly encouraged for all other attendees.  (This is to ensure that we have adequate quantities of food for our reception, and will allow us to pre-print name tags for all participants.)  Registration for students who plan to present research posters will close Monday, September 2 at midnight (12:00am).

I look forward to seeing you on September 5th!!

Best regards,
Brian M. Lawrence, Ph.D.
