MIT Materials Research Laboratory and the Materials Research Science & Engineering Center summer internship

The MIT Materials Research Laboratory and the Materials Research Science & Engineering Center sponsor a summer research internship program for rising junior and senior undergraduates in the science and engineering fields. We would be grateful if you would bring it to the attention of your students by posting or forwarding the attached flyer where your students will see it, or pass it on to an appropriate department for posting.

This challenging program brings promising students to MIT to learn and perform research in laboratories in a broad selection of materials science subfields. In addition to providing a stipend and round-trip travel expenses, we host presentations and group discussions on topics relevant to materials scientists, such as graduate school, careers in materials science, creating effective poster presentations, and management of intellectual property. At the conclusion of the program, the students present their individual research results at a poster session. The summer research internship, offered each year since 1983, affords students an invaluable experience in top-notch cutting edge research.

Bristol-Myers Squibb research scientist position

Vanderbilt graduate school application fee waiver

Twenty-eight Vanderbilt chemistry faculty currently support the research activity of over 100 graduate students and ~40 postdoctoral research associates and senior research staff. I serve as Director of Graduate Studies for our program, and had the pleasure of scheduling the dissertation defenses for 20 of our graduate students over the past year. These students have gone on to post-doctoral positions at CalTech, MIT, Princeton, Yale, and the National Cancer Institute, while others began their careers in industry at AbbVie, Novartis, Merck, and Enanta Pharmaceuticals, among others.

Ten of our current students hold prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowships. Chemistry is also the departmental home for a Chemistry-Biology Interface (CBI) Training Grant funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, a division of the National Institutes of Health. The Vanderbilt CBI Training Program is in its 16th year and is one of 32 such programs in the country. Five of our students are current CBI trainees and six more are trainees of the many other NIH training grants on Vanderbilt’s campus.
You may have noticed that the cover of the July 1 issue of Chemical & Engineering News featured the work of Dorothy Ackermann and Kelly Craft, two Vanderbilt graduate students working in Prof. Steven Townsend’s lab. They demonstrated that human milk oligosaccharides show antibacterial activity, suggesting their protective role for newborns against bacterial pathogens. Dorothy defended her thesis this past year and is a post-doctoral associate at the National Cancer Institute. Kelly will defend her thesis in the coming year and has accepted a post-doctoral position at Harvard. This is not the first time that research from our department has graced the cover of C&E News. In 2008, the McLean lab’s pioneering work on ion mobility mass spectrometry was featured.

While not everyone makes the cover of C&E News, our students are highly productive and visible at regional and national meetings. They publish in high-impact journals and their work has been featured on the covers the Journal of Biological ChemistryChemical CommunicationsACS Infectious DiseasesJournal of Materials Chemistry, and Chemical Research in Toxicology. As such, they are sought by academic, government, and industry labs. I hope that you will recommend our program to your undergraduates. We are offering application fee waivers for applications completed by December 1. Our department offers a broad research portfolio and world-class instrumentation in the supportive environment of a medium-sized graduate program. Vanderbilt has recently established a $300 million Graduate Education and Research Endowment, including a new Russell G. Hamilton Scholars program to support accomplished graduate students. We will shepherd them through their graduate careers and provide them the experimental and intellectual skills to successfully compete at every stage of their future careers.

How GT LEAD can help students ‘Reach Their Full Leadership Potential’

The influx of AI, robotics, and automation into the workplace has dramatically accelerated in the last year, transforming in-demand roles and skills inside and outside organizations. Perhaps surprisingly, those roles and skills focus on the “uniquely human” rather than the purely technical. According to a 2018 Global Human Capital Trends Report (Deloitte University Press), survey respondents predict tremendous future demand for skills such as complex problem-solving (63 percent), cognitive abilities (55 percent), and social skills (52 percent).* To navigate today’s constantly changing work environment and address cross-disciplinary challenges, students will need to be more team-centric, networked, and agile.
The Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Office can assist our students in developing the leadership skills necessary to be successful at Georgia Tech and beyond.
  • Leading Edge | One-on-One Leadership CoachingIn One-on-One Leadership Coaching, students are paired with a trained leadership coach to actively explore and improve their individual and team leadership skills through self-evaluation and feedback from others. They will design and conduct leadership experiments that put your new skills into action and grow their leadership capacity. The time commitment is 5-6 one-hour sessions throughout the semester. Meeting days/time are flexible. Encourage your students to foster their personal and professional leadership skills that will apply throughout their education and after graduation.

Apply Now for 2019 Spring Semester Application deadline is Monday, November 12th at 11:59pm.

  • Minor in Leadership Studies
The Minor in Leadership Studies is designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge of leadership theory, skills, and experience through a rigorous and multi-disciplinary program of study. Students will complete the program by applying their knowledge and skills through a project based experiential learning course. The minor is currently comprised of three tracks – Business, Global Engineering Leadership & Public Policy, offered through the Institute for Leadership & Entrepreneurship at the Scheller College of Business, the College of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the School of Public Policy at the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.

Chemistry-Biology Interface (CBI) Graduate Program at Johns Hopkins University

The CBI Program provides students with research and academic training that enables them to carry out interdisciplinary research as independent scientists. Students completing the program receive a Ph.D. in Chemical Biology.

The CBI Program brings together 28 faculty from the Schools of Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Public Health and Medicine at Johns Hopkins University and provides a diverse selection of research projects for students. In order to assist them in choosing a research advisor, first year graduate students are supported by a NIH Chemical Biology Training Grant. During this time the CBI students participate in three 10-week research rotations that enable them to broaden their research skills and make informed choices of research advisors.

Since its establishment in 2005, the CBI Program has received an enthusiastic response, and we have attracted an excellent group of students. Our program has grown to over 35 Ph.D. students. To date, ~10% of the students in our program are from groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in Chemistry and Biology, and we are very interested in increasing the number of students from these backgrounds. Hopkins is a very supportive institution, and Baltimore is a multi-cultural city. The University has a number of mechanisms to assist minority graduate students, including the Mentoring to Increase Diversity in Science (MInDS) organization. Please feel free to contact me if you or any students are interested in learning more about the Chemistry-Biology Interface Program at Hopkins. You may also browse our website, which goes into more detail about the many facets of our program. A pamphlet describing the CBI Program is available on our website. An image of the brochure is included below.  Please share our information with your colleagues and students.  Thank you for your assistance.

University of Florida Summer Health Professions Education Program

The University of Florida Health Science Center (UFHSC) houses six health related colleges (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health & Health Professions, and Veterinary Medicine). It is the only health science center in the southeast, and one out of three nationally, where all six colleges of health are co-located on the same campus. The UFHSC provides students who are interested in the medical, dental, pharmacy, or public health pathways an opportunity to explore career choices in a collaborative and collegial environment. UFSHPEP is an immersive program where scholars will engage in case-based learning and interprofessional experiences. Scholars will learn to prepare for the rigors of professional school through our academic program and workshops on successful study strategies
