Research projects for undergraduates in School of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Available Research projects for undergraduates in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry
There are many opportunities for undergraduates to perform research in one of our School’s research groups. However, it sometimes takes a considerable amount of effort and time to find a project that is a good fit.

Applications for Undergraduate Research Projects for the Spring 2018 semester are now open!   Please go to the website listed below to find a list of available projects.

All projects listed as "OPEN" are available for you to apply to.  If you are interested in a project on the previous webpage please email me the following information at kimberly.schurmeier@chemistry.gatech.edu:
  • a pdf of your Resume/CV
  • a pdf of a small paragraph which is written to the research advisor/mentor on why you would like to work with them on that specific project.
I will attach your transcript to the documents you email me (without editing it) and send all of the information to the research advisor. The research advisor/mentor will then determine who they would like to contact based on the applications.  If you emailed me earlier this semester about applying to a spring research project, and would like to update your resume/paragraph, put it in .pdf form, and/or write to the advisor instead of me, feel free to email it to me again.

Make sure to review the following webpage to know what will be expected of you as an undergraduate researcher in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

You are welcome to apply for as many positions as you would like. Please let me know if you have any questions; I look forward to hearing and working with many of you.

Cheers,
Dr. Schurmeier

Women, Science, and Technology Learning Community

The Georgia Tech Center for Women, Science, and Technology (WSTseeks women leaders to join the 2018-19 Women, Science, and Technology Learning Community.  Georgia Tech's first living-learning community (founded fall 2000), the WST Learning Community invites female undergraduates in any major to apply for rooms in Stein House and Goldin House (4th St. A & B). An application and a full description of the program appear at https://wst.gatech.edu/wst-learning-community/application. The WST application is due January 26, 2018.

The WST Learning Community enhances the academic and professional development of Georgia Tech undergraduates by creating networks for students and for student and faculty interaction. WST Learning Community residents enjoy academic and career success. Many WST alumnae pursue careers in business, engineering, science, or computing after graduation and a significant number go on to graduate school or to study and work in medicine or law.

Modeled on residence hall programs for women in science and engineering, the WST Learning Community offers dinners, lunches, receptions, lectures, and other activities addressing academic and career planning.  A recent resident remarks "Being a part of the WST program has enabled and encouraged me to apply the knowledge and skills that I have learned at Georgia Tech in many ways. Through the programs and speakers, I have been given the opportunity to not only learn more about myself but also the opportunity to further the cause through research and philanthropic events. "

WST pairs interested residents with faculty mentors, offers volunteer service for residents with a local middle school girls' science club, and provides paid undergraduate research opportunities for students working with Georgia Tech faculty members. Residence hall activities also include study sessions, social events, arts and crafts projects, and community planning meetings.

The student activities fee for living in the WST Learning Community is $200 per term. Activities include dinners and lunches with GT faculty, staff, and administrators; research partnerships; service opportunities; and faculty mentoring. For information about WST and the WST Learning Community, see www.wst.gatech.edu.
