Patent Agent - Information Session 2011

If you have (or will soon have) a degree in engineering, computer sciences, or the hard sciences (chemistry, biology, physics and related disciplines), you can take the Patent Bar Exam to become a Patent Agent. Patent agents can make up to $20,000 a year more than similarly situated engineers and scientists. The Exam is available virtually on-demand via computer. Becoming a patent agent can also be a step toward the even more lucrative career of becoming a Patent Attorney.

If this sounds intriguing, come join Practising Law Institute (PLI) for a presentation by Mark Dighton, PLI's Director of Law School Relations and a Director of their Patent Bar Review Course. Topics for discussion include:

· Careers for patent agents (what the work is like and where you find it), and

· The latest info on the Patent Bar Exam (who can take it, how it works, and recommendations on how to study for this very difficult Exam).

Date: Wednesday, October 12th

Time: 5pm

Location: President’s Suite A, Bill Moore Student Success Center

Chemistry-Biology Interface (CBI) Graduate Program at Johns Hopkins University

We are trying to identify prospective students for the Chemistry-Biology Interface (CBI) Graduate Program at Johns Hopkins University. The CBI Program provides students with research and academic training that enables them to carry out interdisciplinary research as independent scientists. Students completing the program receive a Ph.D. in Chemical Biology.

The CBI Program brings together ~30 faculty from 4 schools at Johns Hopkins University, which provide a diverse selection of research projects to CBI students. In order to assist them in choosing a research advisor, first year graduate students are supported by a NIH Chemical Biology Training Grant. During this time the CBI students carry out three 10-week research rotations that enable them to broaden their research skills and make informed choices of research advisors.

Since its establishment in 2005, the CBI Program has received an enthusiastic response, and we have attracted an excellent group of students. This fall we welcomed our largest (10) class of students yet. With your help, we hope to continue expanding and developing this exciting program. Please feel free to contact me if you or any students are interested in learning more about the Chemistry-Biology Interface Program at Hopkins. You may also browse the CBI website which describes many facets of the program at http://www.cbi.jhu.edu. A pamphlet describing the CBI Program is available on our website. Please share it with your colleagues and students. Thank you for your assistance.

MATCH Teacher Residency: An Opportunity for Your Students

I hope you’ll indulge a short, out-of-the-blue email. I'm the Recruitment Manager of the most selective teacher prep program in the nation (even more so than Teach for America). The program is called MATCH Teacher Residency, and it’s located in Boston. Basically, we give recent college graduates one year of incredibly intense training designed to make them unusually effective rookie teachers. We then help them find positions in high-need schools, and continue to support them as they begin their careers in the classroom.

All the info is here: http://www.matchschool.org/matchcorps/teacher.htm

I have a simple request that seems win-win if indeed you help one of your students find just the "right" opportunity upon graduation: Do you know a few senior Chemistry majors who might want to teach in the inner-city, and who have demonstrated unusual grit and determination? If so, could you please send me their emails, or perhaps forward this along to them?

If you can reply with any contact information or suggestions, I'd be really grateful and send you all the positive karma I have.

Best wishes,

Sara Parr

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Awards in Molecular Science

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is accepting applications for the sixth annual Frank and Sara McKnight Awards in Molecular Sciences. We will offer awards in three areas: Chemistry, Biophysics or Computational Biology and Biological Chemistry. These prizes are designed to recognize undergraduate students with a commitment to scientific research and a record of academic achievement. Approximately fifteen finalists will be chosen from the applicants, and they will be invited to attend a scientific retreat hosted by the Department of Biochemistry at UT Southwestern. There, students will present a poster describing their research. Three young researchers will be awarded first prizes ($2000) while the other finalists will receive $500 prizes. Please share this opportunity with your outstanding undergraduates and encourage them to apply. If there are other pools of qualified students in your institution, we would appreciate it if you could forward this announcement to them, too.

The application process is simple and requires only a brief description of their research experience, a letter of support from their mentor(s) and the usual numerical metrics. We need to receive these applications by October 1, 2011 by email to McknightPrize@utsouthwestern.edu. Students should include Chemistry Prize, Biophysics Prize or Biological Chemistry Prize in the subject line. Thank you for supporting our effort to celebrate research in the molecular sciences. Every year we are encouraged by witnessing the passion and vibrancy that fills these young scientists. The link below provides flyers and a detailed application procedure.

http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/mcknightprize

In addition to our desire to recognize excellence in undergraduate research, we host this competition to familiarize undergraduates with the exciting opportunities for graduate education at UT Southwestern. In that regard, more information about the graduate programs at UT Southwestern can be found at the links below.

Research Symposium - Morehouse College & the Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS)

On September 16th from 1 - 5 pm in the afternoon, the Department of Chemistry at Morehouse College & the Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) will be presenting the 6th Annual Herty Medal Undergraduate Research Symposium (HMURS). As you may remember from previous years, the Herty Medal is awarded annually by the Georgia Local Section to give public recognition to the work and service of outstanding chemists who have significantly contributed to their chosen fields. This year's recipient is Dr. Robert Mark Wightman, W. R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Chemistry from the Department of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As in years past, Morehouse College is again proud to host this event, specific details about which are available online at:

http://chemistry.gsu.edu/ACS/HMURS/

As a member of the planning committee for this annual event, I am writing to you to ask that you forward/announce in class this invitation to all of your undergraduate students who have done or are planning to undertake undergraduate research experiences. Since HMURS will include several lectures aimed at undergraduates from professionals in the field, this event serves as an ideal venue for them to be inspired toward careers in chemistry and the related sciences. In particular, students who have performed research should be strongly encouraged to present posters as there is no registration fee for this event. In addition, two poster presenters will be selected for $500 travel grants to be applied towards attending an ACS National Meeting. (The upcoming meeting of ACS in Spring 2012 will be held in San Diego, CA!). As well, several poster presenters will be awarded one-year memberships in the ACS.

All participants may register through the link for the main HMURS site provided above, or at:

http://www.morehouse.edu/facstaff/blawrenc/hmurs/HMURS/Registration.html

While registration is required for all poster presenters, it is nonetheless strongly encouraged for all other attendees. (This is to ensure that we have adequate quantities of food for our reception, and will allow us to pre-print name tags for all participants.)

I look forward to seeing you on September 16th!!

Best regards,

Brian M. Lawrence, Ph.D.

2011 HMURS Chair

P.S. Program/Department representatives (i.e. for summer research opportunities) are also encouraged to present posters as part of their recruiting efforts.
