The Center for Disease Control and Prevention offers an ORISE position in the Tobacco Exposure Biomarkers (TEB) group.

TEB ORISE Fellow
The Emergency Response and Air Toxicants Branch requests an additional BS-level ORISE fellow to serve as a chemist, entry level, in the Tobacco Exposure Biomarkers laboratory. This is a new request to support on-going research efforts to measure biomarkers of exposure to aromatic amines in support of FDA tobacco regulation.

Skill Requirement

• GPA > 3.0

• Experience in analytical chemistry including solid phase extraction and operation and maintenance of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry instrumentation.

• Excellent written and verbal skills

• Proficiency in the use of EXCEL, WORD, and PowerPoint software.

• Good organizational skills.

Duties to be Performed

• Develop and maintain a proficiency in sample preparation for urinary aromatic amine analysis

• Develop and maintain a proficiency in GC tandem mass spectrometry operation.

• Maintain a daily instrument log detailing the performance and functioning of the instrument. At a minimum this should include: (i) a log book for a record of sequences and samples run; (ii) an electronic excel file for instrument maintenance and performance; (iii) record of service calls and service report; (iv) record of tune files and reports.
  

• Successfully complete a trial PT analysis of the urinary aromatic amine assay within 3 months of initiating work.

Georgia Pacific co-op position - 2011

Laboratory Technician Position At Arizona Chemical - 2011

Arizona Chemical, global leader in the production of pine chemicals, is seeking an entry level Laboratory Technician for a full-time (not temporary) position in our Savannah, Georgia Science and Technology Center. The position is salaried and is eligible for overtime on occasion. The incumbent will report to a senior scientist who will direct the technician’s work in conducting organic/polymer synthesis and application testing of these products. Position remains open until filled.

Job Qualifications:
• 4 year degree in Chemistry from an accredited institution strongly preferred; will consider those with other 4-year science degrees with appropriate course work in Chemistry
• Willingness and commitment to work safely, fully complying with all safety and environmental regulations

The campus deadline for Fulbright applications is September 16, and students need to work with Dr. Karen Adams this spring (karen.adams@provost.gatech.edu) to begin work on the application. Women's Awareness Month - March 2011

On Friday, March 11th, Women's Awareness Month will present a one-night benefit production of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues at 7:30 PM in the Ferst Center for the Arts. Hailed by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant" and by the Daily News as "intelligent" and "courageous," The Vagina Monologues, which was first performed off- Broadway by Ms. Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women's experiences.


Join us as we raise funds for United 4 Safety, an organization that works to reduce the intimate partner violence within the LGBTQQI community by improving the understanding of and response to intimate partner violence through education, training and resource development.



Doors will open at 6:45, and parking is free in the IC parking deck. A dessert reception will be held afterwards for friends and family of the cast.


Tickets are $8 for students, $10 for faculty/staff, and $16 for the public and can be purchased at www.ferstcenter.org.

volunteers for Reception - InVenture Prize Competition

UROP will be hosting a reception for highly sought after high school students just before the InVenture Prize Competition. I am trying to get a few student and faculty representatives from all schools of COS to be there to demonstrate their research/innovations/hands-on technology/etc. I’d appreciate any help you can provide in getting COS to participate. I’m going to have the 6’ tables to use for display, but will try to accommodate whatever is needed.

The reception will be March 9th from (5-6:30) in the Student Center Ballroom. The president will welcome the students and their guests at 5:15pm and a little before 6:30 we will walk them over to the InVenture Prize Competition.

The Washington Semester is open to undergraduate students in all colleges and schools, and it is a comprehensive program, combining coursework, internships and a residential living environment. Students enrolled in the Washington Semester Program:
• Earn at least twelve hours of academic credit
• Work at least 30 hours per week in an approved internship
• Live with other program students in the nation’s capital
• Connect with leaders in public policy, government and business
• Participate in a variety of cultural, professional and social opportunities unique to Washington

Anyone can benefit from participation in this program, even if you are not interested in politics or are not majoring in political science or international affairs. The application deadline for fall is March 1, 2011.

The Quantitative and Computational Finance (QCF) program of Georgia Tech
is Multidisciplinary Program with home units of Industrial and Systems
Engineering (ISyE), Management, and Mathematics.

Please place Thursday and Friday, April 7-8, 2011 on your calender as the date of the 43rd annual Southeast Regional ACS Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC). This year the conference will be held at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. SURC is strictly for undergraduates. The deadline for abstracts is March 25, 2011. Please see the SURC2011 website for more information: http://cost.georgiasouthern.edu/chemistry/surc/index.htm. Both oral talks and posters will be presented at SURC. Please indicate with your submission if the paper is to be an oral presentation, or a poster. The registration cost is $40/participant.

CDC BS position 2011

We are looking for a BS candidate. The job would mostly be routine such as sample preparation and/or some instrument operation in the Tobacco Exposure Biomarkers Lab. Another group, VOC, in my branch is also looking for some BS level chemists.
