Hello all,
The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) at Georgia Tech cordially invites you to its 8th Annual Pre-Health Conference on Saturday, February 15, 2014 from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm in the Global Learning Center on Tech Square. The conference has an anticipated 250 attendees, including health school representatives and pre-health students.
The conference is a great opportunity to learn more about a career in healthcare as well as to gain invaluable insight into admissions processes. This year the conference is themed "Healthcare and Technology" and will feature a keynote address discussing exciting medical technologies and their impact on future health professionals. There will also be several informative workshops on the many facets of becoming a healthcare professional such as the “Admissions Panel”, “Life as a Health Student”, “Women in Healthcare”, “How to Get Involved in Your Community” and more. These panels, which feature a Q&A component, serve as unique platforms to get all your pre-health related questions answered.
The conference will conclude with a health school fair with over 50 schools from across the nation, allowing attendees to network with representatives and learn more about the many health programs available. In addition, students may choose to attend a hands-on workshops and/or participate in a mock interview with an admissions representative. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Registration is $10 for AMSA members and $25 for non-members. Please click on the following link to register if you are a Georgia Tech student:http://form.jotformpro.com/form/40025760319953. For inquiries please contact Safia at safia.siddiqui@gatech.edu or Prerana at pmalla3@gatech.edu.

University of Nebraska REU Program
Please post, forward, or tell your students about the 2014 Nebraska Summer Research Program housed
on the campus of the University
of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The program offers students an excellent opportunity to hone
research skills and to experience life as a graduate student. Students will
enhance their academic resume, work closely with faculty and peers, and have
fun with social and professional development activities, all while
receiving numerous
benefits. Students historically underrepresented in graduate
education are especially encouraged to apply. Due to funding
restrictions, participation is limited to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
All programs for 2014 are listed at http://www.unl.edu/summerprogram
and include projects in Applied Mathematics, Bioenergy Systems, Biomedical
Engineering, Chemistry, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences/Water Resources,
Minority Health Disparities, Nanohybrid Materials and Algal Biofuels, Redox
Biology, and Virology.
Our online application makes it easy for students to apply. Priority
review of applications begins Friday, February 1 and all applications are due
by Monday, February 17.
Thank you for your assistance in disseminating this information.

Research careers conference for undergraduates at Agnes Scott College
I am helping organize a one-day conference "Is a Ph.D. for Me?", for
undergraduate students interested in graduate school and research career options
in the fields of engineering and life science. The conference is will be held on
Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. Please encourage
your students to sign up for this free event (lunch included!). The website is
http://qb3.berkeley.edu/phd/ and the registration deadline
is January 15. I know the school may not be in session yet, but if you have a
way of reaching the students before the 22nd, I would greatly appreciate it! We
have almost a 100 students registered, but would like to share this opportunity
with as many Atlanta area science undergrads as possible.
This is a great opportunity for undergraduate science students to learn
what PhD programs in biological sciences and engineering are all about, talk to
current graduate students, and hear some exciting research presentations from
leading researchers in the field. We would especially like to attract
underrepresented students and those who do not have regular opportunities to
attend research presentations and interact with researchers and graduate
students. Confirmed speakers include Jay Keasling (UC Berkeley, synthetic
biology/ metabolic engineering), Pamela Peralta-Yahya (Georgia Institute of
Technology, biochemistry/biomolecular engineering), Karmella Haynes (Arizona
State University, biological and health systems engineering), and Susan Marqusee
(UC Berkeley, protein engineering). Graduate students from MIT, Georgia
Institute of Technology, Emory University, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco
will participate on a panel and in networking sessions.
I hope you will help spread the word about this unique opportunity by
printing and posting the attached flier at your college or university. Also,
please post the link to the conference website, on your departmental websites,
facebook pages etc.?
Thanks very much, and feel free to contact me with any
questions.
