CDC ORISE fellowship - must be a BS or MS Chemist - May 2016

I have another opening for an ORISE fellowship to start in early May, 2016. I am looking for a BS or MS Chemist or Biologist, who has already received their degree.  At this time, I cannot consider students who have not yet graduated. Could you please circulate this job description to likely candidates?

Fellowships (up to 4-year appointment for graduates within 5 years of receiving their last academic degree) are available within Newborn Screening and Molecular Biology Branch, Division of Laboratory Sciences, National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Chamblee, GA 30341) for bachelor's level chemists, biologists, or biochemists.

General fellowship description:
  1. Serve as a member of the Newborn Screening Quality Assurance Program within the Newborn Screening and Molecular Biology Branch.
  2. Produce, characterize, and analyze data for dried blood spot (DBS) materials used for quality assurance programs provided to state public health newborn screening laboratories and international laboratories.
  3. Conduct and assist research into the development of new DBS materials, assays, and applications in newborn screening, in collaboration with academic, private and state public health laboratories.

Candidates should have a working knowledge of analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or biology, and basic statistics. Familiarity with some or all of the following methods is desired: tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) systems, enzyme immunoassay, fluorescence assays, high-performance liquid chromatography, electrophoresis, and analytical chemistry techniques (i.e. use of pipettes, preparation of standard solutions, volumetric techniques). Independent research and current laboratory experience are advantageous but not required.

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) educational fellowship enables participants to gain experience in a state-of-the-art laboratory while working on laboratory projects of public health significance.

Please send inquiries and CVs to Dr. Joanne Mei at JMei@cdc.gov or 770-488-7945.
